Meet the GHII Staff

Aubrey Chinkunda - Product Developer (Informatics)

Aubrey graduated from the Malawi University of Science and Technology with a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering. He also has a certificate in Remotely Piloted Aircraft Technology (RPAT) from the African Drone and Data Academy. In 2020, he was part of a group of students who worked as volunteer interns in the MUST design studio to develop a prototype of an oxygen concentrator to provide oxygen therapy to COVID-19 patients.

He has worked as an intern in the Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen at Rice University as an intern, developing medical technologies to solve existing global health problems. Aubrey joined GHII in March, 2021 as an intern and currently works as a Product Developer for oxygen-related innovations.


Tobias Bendabenda - Technician (OpenO2)

Tobi holds a Biomedical Engineering City and Guilds Certificate from Medical Aid International and a Level 4 Diploma in Business Management from PACT College.

Tobi provides technical assistance to other employees and interns in various projects. He does metal work projects. He also runs the CNC machine at the organization. He is able to troubleshoot and maintain electronic appliances. He also does construction and building and he was part of the team that built the GHII training center

In 2021 he was part of the OpenO2 mobile teams that fixed over a hundreds of oxygen concentrators across Malawi.

Sophie Gondwe - Finance and Administration Officer

Sophie qualified as an ACCA Affiliate in December 2013 and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Malawi. She has 19 years of experience working in finance and administration departments, working with government institutions, for-profit organizations and in the NGO sector. She has managed funds from international donors including the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the International Union Against Tuberculous and Lung Disease, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Vital Strategies, World Diabetes Foundation and UNICEF.

Sophie’s duties include budgeting, financial reporting, payroll management, treasury and cash management, compliance, administration as well as assisting with HR-related duties such as recruitment and appraisal.


Chipiliro (Chipi) Kadzakumanja - Operations Officer

Chipi is holds a Technician Diploma in Engineering from Modern Electrical College and a Technical Diploma in Information Processing from Nihonteki College. Nicknamed the "bush mechanic" by his colleagues, Chipi has amazing troubleshooting skills and is highly effective at repairing equipment, often coming up with very creative solutions.

Chipi's duties include overseeing the general operation of the GHII Training Center, fleet management, and general procurement. Chipi also lectures in the GHII Saturday morning electronics club.

Mwabi Lungu - Product Development Manager (OpenO2)

Mwabi Graduated from Daeyang university with a bachelor’s degree in Information and Communication Technology. He also has a certificate in Principles of Global Health Informatics institute that has helped him understand how to better integrate information technology in the healthcare system. He joined GHII as an intern in 2018 and later changed roles to the position of product development manager. Mwabi focuses on product development with specialisation in circuitry schematic layout and printed circuit board design. Combining these unique skills Mwabi helps building products in health care using technology.

Linda Mission - Product Developer (OpenO2)

Linda completed her Bachelors degree in Biomedical Engineering at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) in October 2021. She completed her industrial attachment at Mzuzu Central Hospital in 2020 where she gained experience in oxygen concentrator troubleshooting and repairs. For her senior project she designed a wearable device for monitoring atrial fibrillation.

After completing his OpenO2 Corps Internship Linda joined the Global Health Informatics Institute as a full-time employee taking the position of Product Developer for oxygen-related innovations. Part of her duties also involve acting as a deputy team leader of the OpenO2 mobile workshops.

Neverson Nkhata - Assistant Technician (OpenO2)

Neverson joined GHII before it was registered as an organization back in October 2014 as a workshop assistant. He has been involved in putting together all the furniture around the GHII training center. Neverson was part of the OpenO2 mobile team that was going around hospitals across Malawi and repairing oxygen concentrators. He currently works as an assistant Technician in the OpenO2 department.

Mtheto Sinjani - Product Development Manager (Informatics)

Mtheto graduated from Daeyang University in 2019 with a Bachelor’s degree in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). He studied at Handong Global University in South Korea for a semester (exchange program). He started working at GHII training center in February 2018 as an Intern and currently works as a Product Development Manager. Mtheto’s main focus has been product development, from ideation, to finalization and distribution. Combining his unique skills, Mtheto helps building products in the healthcare. Mtheto is also our resident drone pilot.

Giles Pondani - Workshop Manager

Giles is a graduate of a 4-year carpentry program from the Don Bosco Youth Technical Institute. He supervised a team in the construction of the GHII Training Center, and manufactured all the doors, frames, windows and furniture.

Giles is responsible for managing the day to day operations of the GHII Training Center workshop.
