Developing local solutions for global challenges
Our product development initiative operates as a specialized incubator where science and engineering meet clinical reality. We leverage a unique service-learning model, empowering our interns to design, prototype, and manufacture hardware and software solutions that address gaps in the Malawian healthcare system.
Our Capabilities:
Rapid Hardware Prototyping: Utilizing our onsite electronics workshop, CNC machining, and 3D printing to create custom medical components and enclosures.
Digital Health Solutions: Engineering software systems—like the Integrated Data Access Request Platform (iDARP)—that streamline workflows and improve data-driven decision-making.
Rigorous Testing: Every product undergoes iterative feedback loops with clinical partners to ensure usability in high-pressure, resource-constrained environments.
Cardiotocography (CTG) Cart
In a strategic collaboration with Joyful Motherhood, the GHII product development team designed and manufactured a custom Cardiotocography (CTG) Cart. Recognizing that life-saving equipment requires a stable and mobile workstation to be effective in a busy clinical setting, our engineers built this solution from the ground up in our Lilongwe workshop.
The Problem: CTG machines, vital for monitoring fetal heart rates and uterine contractions, often lack dedicated, ruggedized housing in local wards, leading to equipment damage or hindered mobility during emergencies.
The Solution: A locally manufactured, ergonomic cart designed for the specific workflow of Malawian nurses. It debuted during the Joyful Motherhood CTG training session, providing a reliable platform for bedside care.
Impact: Supporting Joyful Motherhood’s mission to ensure the survival of high-risk infants and mothers by bridging the gap between medical technology and clinical usability.
Computer on Wheels (CoWs) Cart
Winner of the Social Impact Award for Healthcare Innovation, our "Computer on Wheels" (CoWs) is a locally engineered mobile workstation designed to bring digital health directly to the point of care by providing a rugged, reliable housing for clinical computing.
Engineering & Innovation
Custom Ergonomics: Designed and fabricated in our own mechanical design lab to navigate the tight, high-traffic environment of crowded hospital wards.
Power Resilience: Equipped with a specialized long-range battery backup system to ensure uninterrupted access to patient data during power fluctuations or ward transfers.
Built for Malawi: Unlike imported office carts, our CoWs are built with durable materials suited for the rigorous demands of local clinical settings.
Our product development capabilities extend beyond clinical tools to supporting the ecosystem of excellence within our organization. For our End of Year Awards, the GHII workshop designed and fabricated custom trophies that embody our commitment to precision and local craftsmanship.
In-House Artistry: Each trophy was designed using 3D modeling (Fusion 360) and brought to life using our CNC Routers and 3D printers.
The GHII Identity: These awards serve as a physical representation of our "ASCII" values (Accountability, Sustainability, Capacity Building, Integrity, and Innovation), proved by the fact that they were built by the very hands they celebrate.
Versatility: This project showcases our workshop’s ability to move beyond medical repair into bespoke industrial design and small-scale manufacturing.
